whats best - longer 5th or different final drive - are they compatible(cable & hydro)
i have an JDM SIR-G hydro tranny w/LSD. the gears are super tight but not so good on the freeway. i want to either put an LS fith gear in or keep the gears the same and put in the LS FD.The car is a daily driver & built for auto-x. Anyone with hybrid tranny experience? I have access to a LS cable tranny - are the gears and final drive compatible in the two types of transmissions?

The ls final drive WILL slow you down in ALL gears.
Final-Drive Ratio: This is the ratio of the gearset (usually the differential) that is farthest from the engine. A ratio of 3-54:1 means the driveshaft turns 3.54 times for every one turn of the wheels. Generally speaking, the higher the number, the better the vehicle's initial acceleration and pulling power. The lower the number, the better the vehicle's fuel economy.
Best to keep the original gsr gears for 1-4 amd drop in the ls 5th for good highway mileage while retaining the acceleration in the previous 4

what about getting a 4.9 final drive and a ls fifth gear.....you never go into 5th while drag racing...but that 5th would save gas and wear on your motor on the freeway....good on a daily driver
