actually, you are right
mine has been hovering around the 4th mark all the time; slightly lower when cruising on a cold night, slightly higher when things get hot.

Brand: Defi
Location: In my car measuring oil at the sandwich plate, but could measure water
Temp when needle at
Cold: 85 F
2nd mark: 90
3rd mark: 95
4th mark: 100
5th mark: 105
.. there are 44 marks...
44th mark: 300 F
Gauge keeps turning another 3-4 marks past 300.
Do you not trust aftermarket gauges? Or are you trying to figure out what the OEM marks match up to?
the 4th mark has to be from ~170 thru ~200, it just stays there even if your car gets "pretty" hot. I've had it a couple marks past that, but it was stupid hot.

Mine never ever ever budges from the mark just below the centre mark, no matter how cold or hot it is outside...thats why i have a GReddy gauge going in shortly, i've had the gauge for ages but was waiting to get the coolant pipe adaptor sleeve to mount the sensor in.

oh sorry if i hadnt put it across clearly, what i'm actually trying to gather is to know wat temp does ur defi (or others) reads while the stock gauge in ur meter cluster points to 3rd, 4th marking ... etc
it will be really kind of you if you can observe those things with your Defi and add to the list

My defi is measuring oil temp, though it could measure water.
So I'm not much use.
Water temp seems to be mostly useless.
The OEM gauge is pretty worthless too.
