Default check engine light / vtech??

hey everyone, any feedback on this would be lovely.

so ive got a 95 civic eg hatch, with a D15z1 vtec-e engine,
the past few days ive been driving her when the check engine light pops on. this seems to happen when i hit around 5k rpms... normally i would feel some power increase with v-tec, but when the check engine light pops on i feel a tremendous loss of power and it sort of sputters around 5k rpms, however i can still drive it "normally" untill the higher rpms... occasionally ill turn it on and the check engine light wont come on and she'll drive normally..

now i know this engines a weak pos. but i love the gas milage heh. so if anyone has any idea's of why shes doing this , please reply.

maybe you should check the codes and tell us what codes you are gettting.. nobody can guess here at what codes you are getting... if anything your low on oil and teh cel is for the vtec pressure switch.. if had that happen.. right after vtec activates it shut off due to low oil pressure and a cel

but as for your codes.. its at the top of the page go there first find out what it is then ask here ill even put a link for you

i had that problem on my 98 ex. there was a short on the v-tec wire going to the soleniod. when vtec engaged, the wire shorted, and the check engine light popped on.

...just a though

ok.. the vtec pressure switch.. can throw a cel for many reasons.. 1 being that you are low on oil.. go get your oil changed..

2 my friends car did this.. because your thermoswitch is going out.. the one that tells the car how hot it is and since the stock ecu wont engage vtec till 180 maybe its tripping out

still shouldnt throw a cel unless the thermostat electrical aspects are shot.

my thermo has been fucked for a while, still no cel and i only get vtec after my car is warmed up and parked in a spot for half an hour

(also fixed now )

Check your oil, but im not sure that would cause a vtec CEL to come up.. go over your lines.

when there is low oil pressure.. the ecu needs a reason to throw a cel.. it cannot just not engage vtec for no reason there has to be a reason.. and obviously oil pressure switch might just be one of those.. also.. STOCK ecus have to run vtec at a cirtain temperature.. it should NOT engage if its cold.. my friends thermoswitch was shorting out or something so it would throw a code for the pressure switch and the thermoswitch

i figured as much with the oil pressure, but my thermo has been shot for a while. vtec doesnt engage, takes about half hour to get up to temp, but the only code ive thrown is a knock sensor (its been there since swap). maybe his may be electrical? ive no idea why i wouldnt be throwing codes... you think i would be like you said.
