Intake Question
Hey everybody I've got a stock Prelude with just a catback on it. I want to get an intake but have a few questions. Yes I searched and didn't find much.
I can't decide whether I want cold air or short ram. Generally, I would think cold air is better but I have been reading about hydrolock and what not.
I live in Kansas, so we do get snow and rain. Nothing too drastic and I know the Intake is up high enough off the ground but I still wouldn't want to take any chances.
I also read a bypass valve would fix any chance of hydrolock... what does that do?
Also, should I fork out the cash for an AEM Intake or would an ebay one work fine? Maybe get a better filter but as far as the piping goes an ebay one would be fine?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

well everything your asking have been covered before. try searching a lil harder. they tested a ebay intake with k&n filter vs a aem intake and the difference was like 1.3 hp i think. you make your call there. as for the bypass valve yes it keep water from getting any further up the intake. i have heard and seen kill stories about hydrolock but in most cases it was a stupid mistake...driving through a huge puddle. if you want to feel safe just get a bypass valve for the heck of it. and get a cold air. just push in the clutch when you dirve over puddles.

x2 or avoid any puddles.
x2 or avoid any puddles.

That's where the AEM CAI filter sits on a 4th gen. Pretty high up if you ask me. You'd have to go thru a VERY deep puddle to completely submerge that thing.
Okay so a cheapie ebay intake will do? Just later down the road get a K&N Filter instead of the cheapie filter?
And press the clutch in when going over puddles... gotcha.
But if I decide to get a bypass valve, are they pretty generic or would I have to get a certain one?

what people dont get is you dont have to SUBMERGE the intake to get water in your engine. if you fly thru a 3-4 in deep puddle you will throw enough water on the filter to get some sucked into the engine. make sure you have the inner fender well/splash guard. it does wonders. + the bypass valve is what i use.

i blew my motor using a cold air intake and almost blew my 3g eclipse using one
our backroads get flooded real bad but when I blew up my prelude motor I didnt think the puddle was that deep, and it wasnt, but it still sucked up enough water to blow it up
i dont know if I want one anymore, im just gonna cut down the cai till i get my turbo

I guess I'LL answer his question - you guys are COMPLETELY off subject.
Anyway, I'm going to tell you to go with a cold air intake.
There are pros and cons of both - and i"ll let you do the searching on that. But what I've found, the pros of the CAI outweigh the cons. Do a search on google, rather than on H-T. The bad thing about the search feature is that people make stupid thread titles that are in no way search friendly. AND, they spell things the incorrect way.
