Miata Cluster into 90-91 CRX
i was thinking of puting a 2001 miata cluster in my 91 rex. the billet gauge rings look nice.... just wondering.... Has anyone done this? anyone know any info about wiring it or have any helpful tips? if not, ill try myself and do a write up. thanks.
your going to get flamed hard, but i can garuntee no one has done it.
your major problems are going ot be as follows:
90-91 usdm crx's have CABLE speedos.
the miata cluster is electric, and most likley accepts the pulses after being translated by the cars ECU/ECM whatever the hell mazda uses.
so the speedo will not work unless your very good with an occilliscope or however it is bench techs/engineers do that sort of thing to MAKE interfaces.
i suppose you COULD get an electric d-series speedo from a 92 and up d-series and then wire it in, but you better hope to god that the 2 companies use the same pulse widths, or else youll end up doing 60mph down the highway, and your speedo only shows 30, or 10mph lets say due to relational differences to the speed pulses.
your also going to need to know how the cluster checks for fuel and temp, and make sure its compatible.
lighting, blinkers, and tach should actually work without issue, but the things i listed above are really going to slow you down.
all of this is under the assumption that mazda didnt use DATA (PCM) for any of their cluster circuits, in which case its not resistence from 12 volt or ground, but actual digital data being sent along a single wire to transmit the information that is decoded by chips in the cluster then displays the required information.
ummm, good luck???

Well similar boat. But in one of the magazines I got it had a Miata with a s2000 motor and they used a s2000 gauge cluster in it. they actually put together the s2000 and miata main harness so all sensors and guage cluster would work.

honestly dude if you wanted that kind of look it might be easier to try to design yourself some different gauge faces and retain the stock cluster. ive seen some people (using good quality equipment) make some half decent looking gauge faces for themselves, then putting some led lights in there or something.
not for me but thought i'd throw in my $0.02
