Default help with axle replacement.

I took my car into have it looked at recently, and both axles were shot, but it would have cost 450 to have the shop replace them both and I don't have that kind of money. I got home on monday for spring break, and yesterday and today I have been attempting to replace them myself. One on side, I got the old axle off and everything, but I can't get the new one to snap into place like it should, and I don't want to damage the new axle by pushing on places I shouldn't, is there any sort of trick when trying to get the new axle to pop into place? On the other side, I have tried everything in order to try and get the lower control arm balljoint lose so I can swing everything to the side. I need my car to get back to college sunday, and right now I couldn't even tow it to a shop if i had to.

Any info, or tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Are you sure it's really not popping in there? You just have to push harder, maybe. And when you say "on one side," being more specific would help; i.e. "driver's side".

Use a jack or other suitable device to lift the entire suspension assembly up so there is no wait on the lower arm. Remove the cotter pin, remove the castle-nut and then push down on the lower arm to try to separate it. If it's stuck, use PB blaster and take a metal hammer and give the joint a few strong solid whacks. Then tap downward on the lower arm with a rubber mallet to separate it from the knuckle.

Dont be gentle with the axle. You will feel and hear a little pop when it goes in. also which side?

i had a problem with putting mine back into the tranny casing before
take a look at the splines on the axle, where it goes into the tranny and i think there is one that is deeper or wider than the rest or something.. it looks different than the others. you gotta line that up with the spline in the tranny, im pretti sure that was on mine...
or i mite just be smoking crack.. it was the first time i ever took the axles out.. and the second time the whole joint fell apart

the side the new axle won't go into is the passenger side, and the side that I can't get apart is the drivers side.

I'll be trying some of the suggestions given tommorow.

Hopefully it is nicer then and things will be easier, it was snowing today.

thank you.

oh and I've been going by the post that the link was given to, or at least trying to.

just align it the best you can and hit the end with a rubber mallet a few times...you dont have to be that gentle with it (but dont go crazy)

As for the balljoint:

when you say hit the end, are you talking about the very end of the axle were the 32mm bolt goes? is that ok to hit it, I thought you were supposed to be careful with it, so not to damage it.

Yes, the end with the nut
A rubber mallet isnt going to damage anything, but youre not going to be hitting super hard either. Just smack it a few times - it will go in, I promise

If you can't get the balljoints off by ghetto-fabbing, just buy a ball joint puller. Easy as pie.

Thanks for that, really helps out the original poster with GETTING HIS AXLES BACK IN his car

thats not going to pop it from the arm...try the method I posted
All a puller is going to do, is mushroom the threaded stud on the joint and prevent you from using it again

awsome the posted method worked, but now I still can't get the new axles in, I've been hitting them with a hammer, pushing, pulling, and I can't get the things to pop in liike they should.

its all I ever had with those things...

you need to separate the entire knuckle, bash the balljoint out, and have a new one pressed in - I had luck with a hammer 1 time

I finally got both of the axles in, only took me 8 hours lol, when you say you have to bash the balljoint out, do you just hit it with a hammer? and what about pressing it in, do you need a special tool or somthing? is there any way I could just replace the boot instead of the whole thing?
