Default CV axle replacement

I need to replace both cv axles in my 91 HF. How hard is it to do, can I do it myself or do I need any special tools? Thanks.

A vise, hmmm. I'll have to see if I have one of those, lol. What is the vise needed for?

i have no clue why you would need a vise??? i did mine today just the passenger side. took 30 mins.. but thats cuz i spend 3 hours the day before trying to replace it just to find out that the new one was defective. the groove for the clip that keeps the axel in was bent in so the clip wouldnt sit flush. but its pretty easy. the hardest part was getting the axel nut off... broke my girlfriends dads 3/8 socket wrench.. you might want to use a breaker bar. all you need is a pry bar, 32mm socket, 17mm socket, breaker bar, socket wrench, hammer, and anything els im forgetting.

yeah its puurrdy easy. if you have a helms manual you can learn alot of stuff if you read that. Or when friends help you out. Thats how i learned. Good luck. Remember, it isn't that hard.

hardest part is getting that axel nut off. I recommend an impact wrench if you have access to one. Otherwise use a breaker bar. Mine were on there so hard I had to use a breaker bar and stand on it and pull myself down while holding onto the door. That was not fun. The rest is straightforward and takes about 10 minutes.

hardest part is splitting the ball joint, I used a pickel fork. Be carefull not to rip the boot. Pull the axel nut off, split ball joint, unbolt the strut, remove the fork on the bottom of the strut, and pull the axel off. You might have to use a pickelfor to split the axel from the tranny. Reverse and repeat

I was informed over christmas that the proper way to separate the joint was to hit it from the side with a hammer. There is actually indents where you are supposed to hit it at, right on the side of the lower part of the joint. I believe the factory manual describes the same process.

It was news to me, but not before I had used a pickel fork to separate the joints during my swap a year ago. I guess either way works, and no damage came from using a pickel fork, but just thought I'd share.

There is a video somewhere here in the forum on separating the lower ball joint.

Basically, you jack up the wheel you are working on until you can fit the handle of a ratchet right behind the lwer ball joint. Then you let off the jack and kick the wheel studs and the thing pops apart. This works really well.

yea either a pickle fork or hitting it with the hammer is good. if u can get a good hard swing in the right spot it will get it loose. replacin the axle shaft isn't that hard...just take off wheel, axlue nut, ball joint and then use a pry bar to slip it out of tranny and then sliding it out. reinstalling it just make sure to line it up with the spliens and then tap it in gently

Here is something I just thought of. The axles connect to the tranny right? The tranny is a 91 SI tranny, will that require different axles or are they still the same as the HF ones.

all d series 88-91 are more or less same length, so that wouldn't matter. Even the bigger dx axles work on the hf tranny, done it before, so that owuldn;t bne ethe probme.lm

But do DX's have their own hub and knuckle or whatever like the Si's? Are DX straight bolt up?

another tip as well when u are sliding the new axle into the transor halfshaft, make sure the c-clip is open end facing down...it will make it go in much easier
