Default VTEC problem

friend has a 98 4door EX and for some reason the vtec does not kick in at all and it revs 4k and no high no matter what and i was wondering what i need to do to fix this problem thanks

And btw, you're not going to feel it "kick in".

dude i have no idea i ahve droven this car one time and im just going off what my friend has said all i know is that it doesnt rev past 4k when the pedel is pined to the floor

Try to get some more info from him... Here are some things to start with:

1) is it occuring in Park/neutral, or in gear. If he's trying to redline in neutral, it's not going to happen. There's a soft limiter in neutral that is set much lower than redline.

2) CEL. If he has one, then it probably has to do with the problem at hand. Pull the code, take it AutoZone, the dealership... Just find out the code.

3) Do the rpms slowly stop at 4000 rpm (struggling to get there), or does it seem like it suddently hits a wall?

i will but when i drove it it just seemd to hit a wall i know it wont go much higher then that when in neutral thats what i thought he was talking about to but it seemd like it just dosnt want to happen like its redline is 4k but i dont know ill get more info and cheak for the code nad get back thanks for your help

ECU is in limp home mode and you will need to determine the CEL. You can use the procedure outlined in the FAQ 6th gen 1998-2002 stickey thread. if it has 5 lugs on each wheel it is a V6 car if it has 4 lugs it is a I4 car

check the ground on the right side of the valve cover by the power steering pump...my car was doing this 2 and the ground was weak so i replaced it with new ground and bam problem fixed..
