Default Rear Wheel Bearing on 2000 SH @ 73k miles?

Surprised to see this happening to a Honda at this low of mileage but it sure shoulds like I've got a rear wheel bearing take a **** on me.

Car is a 2000 SH with 73k miles on it.

I've got a loud hum that has progressively gotten worse over the last week. It started as a light annoyance but from my previous experience with wheel bearings I sure think this is what it is. It gets progressively louder with speed and does not get any quieter when I let off the gas at speed (not RPM/exhaust related.)

Anyone heard of this happening at 73k?

Next question is - how much do you figure it's going to cost me to get fixed? I'm planning on staying away from the Stealership - just got to a local mechanic. I have no interest in attempting a wheel bearing in my garage..

Any help/advice/experience? Thanks H-T !

yeah, it's possible at 73k...especially if you have an aftermarket suspension.

My left rear went at around 85-90K on my 97' SH.. I think it's a fairly common problem, or at least it seemed like there were a lot of posts on it when I did a search.

Replaced both my rears, one at 62k and the second around 70k. So you are not alone at your mileage.

Good to know.. No I don't have an aftermarket suspension - but apparently this is common..

Can you guys please tell me what you paid to have them replaced? I want to get an idea what other people have paid so I can leverage a little bit..

Thanks for your help - makes me feel a bit better that others have had this and it's more of a recurring problem than an isolated one with my particular car.

I did everything myself and paid ~$220 for both left and right rear bearings (genuine honda). It's really not that difficult. If you can change your own brakes, the bearings aren't much harder. Not sure what someone would charge to do the whole job though.

My 93 all the bearings are shot. They scream at me now when I drive, no grinding yet, all new bearings from honda will set me back about 500$, but it's worth it in the end, nothing beats a quiet car.

yeah like they were sayin i had to replace my back passangerside bearing at 62k so i just decided to do both of the rear bearings. cost me like 350 bucks with labor. but then again my cousin got me the bearings for fairly cheap and he did the job himself. that rear bearing though was god awful lol couldn't turn it more then a 1/4 of an inch without struggling.

My right rear went out @ 75000, it cost me around $300. It was about $80 cheaper than the dealership.

Find a local shade tree to do it for $25 labor. We found the part for $88.

Nice!

Rear wheel bearings do not last long on the preludes for some reason

Weight issue? Or suspension design issue?

I'm just glad that I'm not the only one who has had this happen and at $100 installed, I can't bitch.
