Default Identifying engine serial number

I've been doing searches all over but can't find anything which breaks down the engine serial number stamp. I'm trying to find out EXACTLY what year this case is that I bought so I can determine bearing clearances and such. One book I've found said the 4th, 5th and 6th numbers are the identifiers and on my case it's 1505235....so what do 523 mean? Which is the year? Thanks for any help you folks can give me!

Easier than looking on the # is to look at the head, front side just above the exhuast manifold.. There should be three little clock looking thingy's! One is the year, month and day of build.
Done.

I only have the short block so far.....was looking to find a nice usable head or one that I can rebuild. Do you think that might also correspond to the 3 digits in the case stamping? 523 meaning 1995 February 3 maybe? Thanks for the response!

What kind of block are we talking about and why do you need to know the year? More info would help.

Alot of blocks are interchangeable between years.

Sorry for not being too specific.....I bought a D16Z6 shortblock that had been surfaced and honed for a build I'm working on. The guy I got it from wasn't sure of the year.....he thought it was a '95 but not certain. According to one book I've been using the oil clearances are different for the Z6 engines during the years 92-95 so I wanted to make certain of my clearance since I don't plan to pull this thing apart in the next 50k miles.

I was wondering also because the deal I made was under the condition that the engine was a 96. (LS) Will check head for time clocks.......
