car tempeture
There is definitely something wrong. I am running my car without either front fan connected, and the temp will not go above operating temp, which is about 2/5ths up the temp gauge, maybe alittle more. And this is in Florida, with over 80* temps lately and I drove it all day today in city traffic, stop and go, and it never goes up further.
I did get stuck at a construction zone and I let it sit and idle for 15/20 minutes, just to see if it would ever overheat, instead of turning the car off till they let us pass. Well, it did start to move the needle further and further, so I just turned my heat on and luckily the traffic started to move and the temp came back down.
I do have a fairly new radiator that is only like 1.5 years old. As long as I keep the car moving, air cools the radiator, and if I don't sit at idle for more than 15 minutes, all is golden. Now I can see how stop and go in a big city could generate enough heat to need an operational fan. And A/C needs it also to function correctly.
And I will have both fans running properly soon, cause I love A/C too much.
When I had a problem similar to yours, one of the hoses under the intake manifold had a slow leak that gradually let enough coolant escape untill the car started to overheat. So I replaced all the hoses because at 14 years old, they were all starting to go. Haven't had a problem since. Good luck finding your problem.

AIR POCKET. On the upper radiator hose where it goes into the block, there is a bleeder screw. Loosen it up and let the car run for about 20 min. When all the air is out, coolant will **** straight out of it at a continous stream. While ur letting the car run, leave the radiator cap off and keep adding coolant when it gets low.
