CRX Studders and Dies after 6 Gallons? Fuel pump?
Just picked up a crx......for some reason, it dies when i burn about 6 gallons. Everytime i fill up, its approx 6 gallons, and if i dont, itll choke out and die.
The car has a jdm d15b, obd1 conversion, has a fuel rail for some reason without a regulator, and im presuming the pump is stock. It chokes up a lil at low rpm (2k), like studders like it might be a lil too rich, and then clears up after maybe 3k rpm.
The car doesnt seem to have too strong of a pull either.....esp after higher rpm after vtec engauges.
The plugs are kinda black from being rich...but the plugs themselves looked identicle and relatively new shape.
It doesnt help that the fuel guage doesnt work.....so i never really know exactly how much gas is in the tank. **EDIT I swapped clusters, and the guage works now***
So i guess my questions are: Why does the car die after only 6 gallons? Im pretty sure the tank is stock, so thats what, 2/3's full? Maybe the pump is weak?
And should i put a regulator on the rail? The injectors look stock, so i presumed that it wouldnt be pushing too much fuel.
I was just thinking about swapping the tank, and the pump at the same time...my friend has a civic Si donor, and everything should be good on that. But if the pump is weak, why doesnt it die any other time, besides after burning 6 gallons?
Any help is appreciated

It doesnt have noticeable damage.....i was just redu'ing the suspension and took a look. Nothing abnormal. Maybe ill double check just in case, but ill probably rule that one out
for the advice

it kinda sound to me like someone replaced the fuel pump and didint know what they were doing and bent the sending unit where it holds onto the pump ya know
that could explain why it doest read if the pump and pickup are sitting in there crooked
and if the pump is bent it wont pick up the fuel at the bottom of the tank
i would pull out the sending unit and check that out first

Thats a very good idea.....my friend and I were going to take a look at the pump this weekend for anything noticeable.....were thinking of changing out the pump anyways, while we were at it.
I might just swap EVERYTHING over from the hatch, since i hear its all the same anyways

It may have the wrong pick-up/filter on the pump. i have seen a similar problem on a 90 si. i dropped the tank and took out the pump and noticed the filter was at a weird angle. i ended up going to the parts store and compared the filters they had for 88-91 civics/crx's. i beleive the crx filter sits at a higher angle than the civic filter, but the pumps were the same. Hope that helps

Yeah, i couldnt be sure....I guess ill just have to open it up and look around inside
***I did fix the guage problem.....the old cluster gave up on it i guess, and i swapped it out and it works now. So i know the tank is the right one then.........just something is keeping it from sucking the rest out of it after 6 gallons or so

Maybe the person that you bought it from was a drug smuggler and forgot that there is some drugs still hidden in the tank
I would just get a regulator on there and see if it does the same thing. If not check to make sure that the pickup is on right. I almost made the mistake of putting the pickup on sideways.

Yeah, i might try the pump....at least ill be able to check whether it in on there right at the same time. The guy I'm selling the car to eventually is helping with the labor, so Ill let him know tomorrow
