If he wants to run an ITR intake manifold he needs to switch to a B16/ITR head.

A friend of mine Type R' ed his B18C1, of course with legit parts!

He has the complete ITR valvetrain, pistons, oil squirters, headgasket, crankshaft, and tranny. He kept the GSR's intake and head for it's increased low and midrange torque. With the this setup the motor will run almost 12 points compression so he added another headgasket to lower it and runs a chipped OBD1 ECU.

No one can give you an accurate estimate, but your friend needs to get a better header if he wants to make more power. JDM 4-1 is a cheap solution. Just dyno it, that's the only way he'll know how much power he's making.

I remember that too. It was a spoon type r conversion kit, I cant remember exactly what came with it, but it was a lot of coin though.

Well cars are a very expensive hobby, don't think there's any route that's "cheap" by any means.

but nothing like a turbo/sc or aftermarket cams/valvetrain, things like that

ITR spec may end up costing him more than aftermarket cams/valvetrain.

Here is my perspective on your friend's issue...

Doing a complete Type R conversion (properly mind you) is going to cost pretty big money. The first thing I would do is look to spend some money on tuning. Get a VAFC, Cam gears, do basic tune-up stuff and hit the dyno.

My B18C1 baselined at 140whp with basic bolt ons. With a few mionor changes to fuel and timing we were able to get 150whp.

If you really want to change parts there are 3 places to look for power on that motor:
1)Cams
2)Manifold (skunk)
3)Compression (headgasket, pistons, shave)

If you are on a budget I would look into #1 and #3. Find a pair of used CTR cams for $300 (that's what I paid for mine). Pull the head and take it to a machine shop and have it tanked, valve job, and shaved .040". Put it back together with a thin headgasket ($130) and the new cams. Hit the dyno.

If you do the manifold you'll need a new ECU program also.

cams = $300
gasket = $130
manifold = $300
ecu = $200
machine work = $500
cam gears = $300
VAFC = $300

You can see that even the most basic conversion is expensive.

One more point here.... Whatever you do, keep the GSR rocker arms! They have a mor agressive ratio than the ITR/B16, so you'll end up getting slightly more out of a cam.

Good luck.

Thanks LunEG!
