I once did it using rope. That's pretty cheap. Used my buddies truck to do it. Not exactly the safest thing. (The guy being towed has to have a working engine and be responsible for braking both vehicles.) It's probably also not legal on many roads.
See if you can borrow a friends truck and then rent one of those "a frames" or whatever they are called or a 2 wheel dolley to mount your front wheels on.

sign up for AAA. It's only $50 a year (up to 7 miles and 4 tows) or $100 for their premimum plan (200 miles for the first tow).
for really long distances go rent a hitch from u-haul

lol yeah sign up for AAA, pull over in MD and slice one of your tires, then say you live in NY and get it towed home
AAA membership + 1 tire < $600
I win.

go to u-haul and rent one of the trailers that lift up the two front wheels and drag the rears. Obviously you need a truck to pull the car but besides that its cheap. I rented one for 2 days and it only cost $75.
Some places even allow that you can pick it up in one city and deliver it to any of there other locations across the country.

I would just use a flatbed..but then again I have open access to one so that's kind of redundant...
what he said, get a tow dolley, best way short of a flat bed IMO
