Default More paint questions from the noob

I want either Milano Red or Rio Red. Where do I go about getting these colors? How much would I need to do a CRX and how far do you guys sand before you paint? What primer do you use etc. I know of some who dont use primer, others who sand the paint just till its real rough, how do you go about it. I dont want to buy a bunch of sanders for my aircompressor, so what is the best one to go for. My friend used a regular random orbital sander that he uses for wood on his car and it turned out good, but would you recomend this? What grit paper and stuff? I am lost, I plan to paint it myself, and if I mess it up, have my neighbor do it who is awesome, he owns a body shop. Thanks in advance.

i'm getting ready for a 1st time diy paint job as well.

http://www.paintscratch.com will have the color you want.
1 gal of primer, color, clear
after i fix all the rust and dents i'm going to wetsand with 400 until the clearcoat and base is gone.

Your tank might have some moisture in it and it could mix with the paint. Look into a filter to eliminate moisture before it reaches your spray gun.

good luck

Thanks. That is everything I wanted to know. I have yet to decide which filter I want to purchase, I am probably just gonna buy an expensive one since I see a lot of painting in my future. How many coats are you going to do of each? I have hear like 3 primer, 5 color, and 7 clear!!! I dont know if that is good or not, seems like a lot to me, but if that is what it takes to look good, well then thats what I am doing. Thanks eda6

I did a diy paint job also, It was mostly a expletive around project which ended up perfect.
The previous owner on my honda used cheap clear so it cracked.

- I sanded down till i saw the second dark layer of primer ( first was gray, second was black). I used 60 grit to take down the paint and clear, and then switched to 120, 220.

-I bought alot of Omni ppg primer, Sealer.

- Sprayed downt he car with it let it dry for a day, did it again, etc . primered 3 times.

-I then put a different color of primer ontop as a TRACER coat. So when i sand it down, i can see if there are dents and **** and so i know im getting an even surface under the different colored top coat.

-I then checked the body under sunlight for dents, and such.

-After this i had my friend who is a painter come in and help out.

-We cleaned the car with thinner and a tack rag to take of grease and materials.

-Placed a large fan by the garage

-Painted the car with Nissan 350zx blue metallic. And waited two days sprayed 3 more times. Added 4 layers of clear coat and finally sanded the car with 2200 sand paper and buffed it out, came out great.

Get :
-gravity feed airbrush gun
-Good tape, not that gay brown masking tape.
- PPg omni everything!
- 12 inch sandpaper block to get even surface if u have dents. ( used with tracer coat)
- ALot of sand paper, and an orbital sander. get 60 grit, 120 grit, 220 grit, 400 grit, and 1200 2200 grit.
- Paint while in the 70 degrees it turns out best.

thanks for the info efnewb91. I appreciate that. My body doesnt have any dents or anything, just 2 rust spots to fix, but I am having the body garage in town here fix them, well give me a hand. Since I dont need to see dents and dings, can I use all one color primer? How far do you sand the primer and the clearcoat? Sorry, but I am new to car painting, I have gravity fed tractors and a mud truck that didnt matter if it looked good and stuff, so this is my first time actually caring. thanks again

If you have no dents, just put one color primer, and sand off completely your clear coat and half of the original paint, you dont have to sand to bare metal unless you have a shitty body.

I would probably start with 80 grit all over the car, and stop with 120 to get an even soft surface, and spray with primer, then sand again with 220 and primer again etc.

And then paint
