Advance engine, how many degrees max ?

 

18 degrees

 

what would be the effects of running more? when I bought my car, previous owner had the thing set at about 20. would the knock sensor on the car save the engine from potential damage or should I be worried? I didn't hear any knocking before I reset it to 18.

 

My compression is about 11:1 or so, and with ITR cams I had best results at 21 degrees timing.

93 octane.

 

My best dyno # from stock cams came at 20 degrees, and with my B's the best # came at 16 degrees.

 

Same with Vegeta. His motor with B's lost power at 20 and even more at 21.
Made best at like 16 or 17 if I remember.

 

okay, but is it safe to run at 20, stock, other than maybe the knock detector kicking in and retarding the timing?

I had best results at 18 on my 98 with Spec B's. My 2001 I can't advance the timing at all. Isn't that an ecu thing?

 

I don't think so! The distributor should still set timing.

 

My car ran strong & safe either way

 

Did you remember to short the service connector first before changing the timing?

I run/ran 19 degrees on the streets . . . No AC or PS loading the engine though.

 

Advance it till it starts pinging, than back it off a few degrees if you want to be safe.
