Default MY problem of the day - Random, possessed tach needle

So I'm having tach issues.
Sometimes the tach reads normal. Other times, it shows about 1/2 what it should show. Othertimes it rests at 0 on the needle! Anybody want to take a guess as to whats going on?
I haven't tried to fix anything yet, but first I'm going to double check the plug going into the back of the cluster and make sure it's in tight. Next, check plugs on the dist. Then check grounds. My last option is to try someone elses to see if it has the same problems to determine if I have a bad tach.
Well, anyone have this issue, post up.
Thanks!
B

*edit* It's a stock 95 EX from Canada.

I have some ideas, but I'm hoping to catch someone that had this problem who could pinpoint it right away so I don't waste time on some dumb **** lol.

try buying a used guage cluster and see it that is the problem. you can usually get them for less than 50 bucks.
