welding motor mount to block?
hey guys im having problems with my drivers side mount and question ran through my head... i dont know a lot about welding but is it possible to weld my mount to the block itself? if so would it be strong enough? at first i didnt think so b/c i think the mount itself is cast and im not sure if it would work but if i could do that it would save me a lot of hassel... thanks guys

I, Mysleft have never seen this done it really depends what type of weld you do and under which driving conditions, if it is for street then no, you can't weld it but if it's for track they it should be fine otherwise it would constantly break
Block is aluminum
Mount is cast iron
Nope.
If your issue is stripping out spots on the motor... driver side mount?... there is supposedly a kit out there that uses a bolt spot on front and back of motor instead... its like a big U shaped bracket that goes around.
Or take it to a shop and have the old holes helicoiled or timeserted... or if really bad... welded up and retapped.

The kits to do the job... last I checked... are not cheap.

even if you could weld it, it would break.
timesert is along the lines of a helicoil, but stronger since it is a whole new sleeve.

not real hard to do if you are have the tools , but it will probably be cheaper to find a shop that does it unless you can find a place that will sell you just the number that you need, rather than paying for the kit.
a helicoil would work too.
most places will charge 30 bucks or so to do it.

ive called around to all the machine shops around here and all of them are worthless to me... the only one that will do it(they did it last time) are in the middle of being inspected right now
and the guy who normally does it isnt even there today... i went to advance auto parts b/c i know they sell helicoil kits there but they dont have anything big enough... im trying to get this motor in and running today so if anyone could help me out and let me know where i could get one of these kits that would be great... thanks guys!

do you have napa in florida? one of the shops might just sell you one even if they don't have time to do it for you.

Have you tried calling machine shops? instead of auto shops? That would probably be your best bet... but probably requires u to take it to them.
nm: i forgot you mentioned machine shops called... duh
My local machine shops all do helicoil or timeserts... wierd that yours don't. Ask if they do helicoil AND/OR timeserts. They really should

when i bought my block, i had found out that where the mount bolts up on the drivers side had been helicoiled and part of the block broke off while i was driving, so i just JB welded the piece of the block back in and used a grade 8 bolt in the remaing helicoiled hole and it is still holding up after 2 months

sounds like you are set assuming the hole size is right (which it is if they had the 12mm helicoil). i didn't know all that came in the kit, having never bought one that way. good luck.
