Default Look what I found in between my cylinder walls and block... RTV???

Block is a 2.0 sleeved LS. Blew a headgasket and went to take off the head and while I was inspecting the coolant passage ways I saw a few pieces of orange stuff floating around. So I then looked deeper into the passage ways and found that right on the sleeve was chunks of RTV. It was around all the cylinders under the sleeve. Here's some pics of the RTV and where I found it. I know I know, they look like baby aliens but they're really RTV chunks. Any idea of where it could be from or why its there?

And I found all that in here...

Thanks in advance

Who did the sleeve job? Could be the adhesive used when re-sleeving.

We didnt use RTV on the head gasket, we didnt know that stuff was in there untill after we ran the motor for about a week.

Someone suggested that it could have been used as a valve cover sealer and when they peeled it off the excess stuck to the block and dried, where it later broke loose and fell into the coolant passages?

call the guy you got the motor from and find out who did the motor.

Are you sure you blew a head gasket? Didn't you say it looked fine?

It could have been something else, maybe the RTV was sealing something and it got too hot and came off causing whatever it was sealing to be exposed and coolant to get into your motor.

ever use any stop leak stuff in your colling system ? this could be resudu from it. basicaly is hardens when the coolant is cold but once it's warmed up it turns to liquid form plugging any leaks you would have in your cooling system... if not you possibly the folks you bought the block from there were some residu in the block itself.

quick test, take a peice of it and place it in boiling water if it melts it's not a huge consern... if not... not a clue.

If it was from a sleeve, would that mean it dropped a sleeve? Because we measured and all the sleeves look level.

If i put it in boiling water and it melts what would my huge problem be? A crack somewhere in the coolant passages of the block?

Thanks Vine for the quick reply, i will get you that serial number tonight.

Not sure its a broken motor yet guys. I posted this in two sections, had multiple responses that they found the same thing in their motors shortly after sleeving. I think im going to try it again, now that the coolant system is flushed and i have a new head gasket. See what the results are, if it happens again then we have some serious issues, whether it be warped head or bad sleeves. If not, then happy boosting. Prey for me guys.

my theory esh, high temp rtv is suppose to be good. a 2.0 sleeved motor is a serious monster, expect it to need maintainence. Head gaskets blow, it lasted 6 months, sounds about right. This is why daily drivers cant be monsters. This is why Ive got my internally bone stock ls. Lessons learned the hard way are the best way.

The car was not driven for 6 months, only about a week and less than 100miles, and non boosted.

Looks to me like a noob builder thought that the block guard shouldn't allow any fluid to the top of your cylinders and tried to seal it with RTV. Make sure to have the passages cleaned out, maybe a good soak in one of those block cleaners at a machine shop.
