Default gearing went wrong

the other day my shift linkage (formally two welded into on to custom fit a ef with a b-series) broke right at the weld. last night i spent a good hour or so trying to get the pin that hold the linkage to the part sticking out of the trans.(right after the swiveling section) my dad came up with the idea to put a piece of metal inside the linkage and drill through and bolt it together. We did that today and it worked fine untill i went to drive it. taking off it felt really different, i have a stage 1 clutch but it deffintly was like trying to launch it in 2nd or 3rd gear. once i got moving my "1st gear" went up to about 25mph easy without revving high and im usually in 3rd gear by then. my car goes into every gear fine, it just feels like somehow they switched. my shifter also used to be short but just a short top to bottom throw now its short everywhere and kind of difficult to find the gears.

does anyone know what could have possibly went wrong? im trying to fix this myself to keep from having to spend another 150 on a new linkage.

i'm open for any positive ideas or thoughts.

it sounds like you bent/twisted the linkage and you are shifting into 3rd (or 2nd or whatever) when the shifter is in the position for 1st. get it up high so that you can see what is going on where the arm on the tranny is and adjust things until it works.

i'd imagine you could get it right again by trial and error, but a new one, or comparing to a known good one and rewelding would be the quickest.

either way i'd get it up and look at it first to see if it was a quick fix.
