VTEC noise?
Should there be a sound difference when my VTEC engages? I have an f22b1 accord and there is no sound change. Could this be because my VTEC doesn't work? In my friend's h22 prelude, you can hear the VTEC clearly.
Man, does this get asked often...
No, you will not hear it. Different engines, different purposes for VTEC, SOHC VTEC only on the intake cam, DOHC VTEC on both intake and exhaust, variable engagement points for SOHC as opposed to set engagement points on DOHC....
Get an intake, and maybe you'll hear it.

I set up my digi cam in my engine bay out of curiousity. At 38seconds you can hear me starting to accelerate, and at 41 seconds SOHC Vtec engages. Nothing special, but better than nothing. (This is on a 6th gen F23 accord)

you shouldnt be able to hear it. if you have an intake and you THINK your vtec engages at 4k rpms you are wrong, no matter how cool it sounds. f22b1 vtec is form 2300-3000 rpms based on a whole slew of parameters being met.

160? That's gotta be a misprint or something.
The '97 2.2 CL (F22) had 145 hp, 147 ft-lbs. This was the first year for the CL.
'98 saw the introduction of the F23, and thus it became the 2.3 CL. The engine produced 150 hp and 152 ft-lbs.
'99 saw no engine change. This was the last year for this model.
The next CL was in '01, and they only came with the 3.2L V6.

So my Vtec light isn't lying after all!
Depending on throttle pressure, it comes on anywhere from 2500-3500, from what I've seen.
My wife swears she can feel it, I say shes full of it. I can't feel OR hear anything.
The only thing I hear is at 5500 RPM the engine pitch changes drastically: gets much higher. Sounds very cool.
I have an AEM CAI also.

people that have aftermarket intakes seem to swear that their vtec kicks in at whenever just cause it changes note as it's revving. it isn't due to vtec. single cam vtec doesn't work the same as dual cam vtec does, which you can hear the crossover point.

sri here.... can anyone clearify that sound. what is happening? sounds very cool. too bad it only last for a second in first and i hate to speed so i rearly hear it in 2nd gear.

I'm going to sound like a ricer for saying this, but I can definitely hear my VTEC engage. But, (yes, there's a "but") I can only hear it during situations where it engages below 3000 rpm, especially at 2300. Above 3000, nah, I can't really hear it.
Anyway, you can hear it more on DOHC motors for 2 reasons:
1. More aggressive timing and lift on DOHC motors (for performance), whereas SOHC have a "mild" setup with more economy and efficiency in mind, rather than performance.
2. DOHC VTEC affects both the intake and exhaust cams, instead of just the intake cam on SOHC motors.

i wasn't able to hear it at all until i put the p28 in my car with vtec staticly set at 2800 rpms. if i shift early into 2nd gear i can hear the change at around 2800, but this is only sometimes. hard to explain.
