H22A into civic sport 97, smog issues
ive been trying to get a complete swap for my EJ8. i have a obd1 in the car now and cannot smog. i need to know the differences of all the H22A engines obd1 and obd2 so i can make a right choice on which engine to get.
if one is better then the other i want to know so i can make sure i get the best engine. i all ready made the mistake of buying the wrong motor once (d15b vtec). ehh it sucks.
Any input or links would be great. kinda hard topic to search for.

What differences specifically?
I guess the law is that the engine has to be the same year or newer than the chassis.... so you're looking at a 97-01 H22A. All of those are OBD-II and come from the newest body style, BB6 chassis code.
The base Prelude is rated at 195hp for 97-98 and 200hp for 99-01 (rated 5hp less for AT). Same hp for the SH (different block, ATTS, and I think cam profiles also), and the JDM Prelude Type-S is at 217hp or so. The JDM base H22A should be at ~200hp also. The automatic trans eats a lot of power BTW.
Things to consider:
1. ECU choice: OBD-II Prelude ECU has an ignition immobilizer
2. EGR is a pain to install (well, compared to not installing it lol), requires a Prelude ECU, and probably required for your state's smog.
3. IAB can be wired easily with a Prelude ECU, trickier with a P06/P28, or it can be mechanically operated with engine vacuum.
Quick searches on this board should answer all of your more general questions. Post specific ones here.

97+ ecus (obd2b) have immobilizer, but if you can get your hands on a 96 (obd2a) ecu, you won't have to deal with it.

But you know how rare those ******* things are lol
Forgot to mention, but an OBD-II GS-R ECU would also work... not as well as the Prelude ECU but you don't have to deal with the immobilizer. There's a lot of debate about the P72/H22A combo though...

No problem. First, what state are you out of? If you already have poured money into an engine swap, it will totally suck to do it all over again! Let us know where you are located, and we can work for there. You don't have to do another engine swap just to register it.
