Shifter stuck in park - electrical?? *searched - really*
I have this weird problem and i was wondering if anywone could help me out if have heard of somthing like this. I've searched this topic but can't find the answer i'm looking for. The car is my girlfriends 93 civic si coupe - auto.
The car is stuck in park and the brake lights don't work. So first thing I think of is the brake light switch. I tested the switch (with and ohm meter) and it seems to work properly. Just to be double sure i jump the switch with a wire, still nothing. This is where it gets strange. I noticed when i jump the switch (or press the brake pedal with the switch in place) I hear a hissing sound and a burning smell from under the dash somewhere. I should also note that the clock resets itself to 1:00 all the time and i've had to rewire the horn because it also didn't work when she bought the car. No fuses have ever blown either.
If anyone has any input on this i'd appreciate to hear it. I'm just trying to save some time troubleshooting.
Thanks!!

I had the same problem in my eg sedan. Turned out to be the fuse in the engine bay. It's for the horn and brake lights. If the brake lights don't go on it won't let the car go into drive. Try it out. Use a 20 amp.
Thanks for the input guys, keep it coming.
I'll look into the guage cluster idea, havn't thought of that. I can hear a hissing sound and burning smell coming from somewhere under the dash when i jump the switch so somthing is up somwhere. I've checked all the fuses already and everything is fine there. There very well could be a short somewhere but it'll be a pain finding it under the dash (i've checked everywhere else).

I don't think it's the brake lights as much as the brake sensor, either way, that's worth a try. Though yeah, it sounds like a short, the smell and hissing sound.

found the problem... junction c417 was badly corroded and was shorting out. Cut all the wires and sliced them back together properly. Everything works fine now.
