Default couple of noob ls/vtec questions.

hey guys, just a few quick questions.

I have a gs-r swap in my 98 civic dx. I came across an ls motor for 100 bucks that im gonna pick up to do an ls/vtec. My few questions are simple. This is gonna be somewhat of a budget build. So, can i just use all of my stock gs-r bottm end parts in the ls bottom end? And if so, will it still be safe to rev out to the gsr 8200 rpms? Sorry for the noob questions, but this will be my first motor build.

Ryan

If you have a gsr motor, why down grade to an ls motor? It will be essentially the same thing. 2 more mm on the crank won't even net a worthwhile gain. But, if you do decide to do it... the gsr internals will work, you might need to hone the block to make sure everything is nice and round though. You should be okay revving out to 8200 on that setup.

yes you can swap your gsr parts to the ls block, i suggest upgrading to arp rod bolts and new oem rod/main bearings.

The smartest thing to do would be to put the LS crank, rods, and maybe some better OEM pistons into the GSR block. That way you could leave you head alone, and then all you have to spend you're money on is new rings, bearings, ARP rod bolts, and a new head gasket. That would be doing things the right way

I've built motors like this a grip, and they have ran hard. So good luck on the build.
And remember your building the motor not H-T member

You can use the oil pickup, windage trage, and block girdle off of the gsr block. (take it to the machine shop when u get it bored.)

U dont want the gs-r internals you want the LS crank, along with either some forged LS rods and some Nice forged high compression pistons.

You may also be able to get away with shotpeening the ls rods, and getting some higher compression OEM cast pistons. Either way you go, buy 81.5 mm pistons and have the block over-bored from 81 to 81.5mm so your starting over totally fresh.

Good luck with everything theres tons more to learn, you can also use a gsr timing belt, water and oil pump. ( u can re-use yours if theres low miles on them.)

^^ i agree to that, so the ls crank and rods are better than that of the gsr?

Whatever floats your boat, but I think bigger is better if built correctly.
So are you going to put the LS crank and rods into the GSr block.
