anybody know an easy way to get the trans cover back on the trans?

i am having a hell of time getting it to go all the way down and mate with the case

Make sure the snap ring is still expanded, then flip the whole tranny over with the case partially on and smack it on the ground. (You can almost drop it from a inch or 2 off the ground) That will get the case back on.

It will work. I used this method when I rebuilt my tranny.

you mean have someone hold it open with snap ring pliers while you drop the cover to the trans?

 

No, the snap ring should actually remain expanded while the case is off the transmission. You shouldn't have to worry about it.
