Can't set correct timing, Distributor is all the way to the front
Paper clip is in the service connector, waited until the cooling fan turned on. All vacuum lines are routed correctly. Went to do the timing and I can't get the center mark on the pulley to line up with the pointer, because my distributor will stop and the very front of the motor. It's not off by much, but it's still advanced 5 degrees +. How can I fix this?
Can you elaborate? I bought the motor from the yard and I've never taken it apart, and I highly doubt the owner before me would have, the only thing I can think of is that the timing belt has been changed once before I got the motor but it looks like it was done by an acura dealer.
How can it look like if an Acura dealer did it ? They trying to tell you that it might be the cam is off a tooth
is this the 91 hb with the b18a in it in your sig ? if it`s at the front of the motor it`s retarded. check the tdc wires at the ecu and see if you have them backwards . if not check them at the dizzy . i also would check the timing belt .

There was an oem oil filter and t-belt on the motor when I bought it from the junkyard...logical guess

Yeah. I believe it's advanced. Move the distributor towards the front to retard, right? It won't retard enough so its still advanced. What are the pinouts for the tdc wires? I did a dpfi to mpfi wiring swap, maybe there's a problem somewhere.

hmm im having the same problem with my 91 d16z6 crx.....my dizzy is all the way to the front and still off 4 or 5 degrees...it runs like a top but its got kind of a rough idle, that why i checked mine
On my '87 Crx si I had the same problem.
The answer was the actual distributor itself.
the advance internally to the distributor would not move. I replaced it with a different distributor and all is well. Take the distributor cap off and see if the distributor advances
when you put vacume on the advance.

I am reviving this thread because I am having the same problem. Distributor is retarded all the way (towards the front of the car) but the timing is still advanced 4-5 degrees. Does this automatically mean the cam timing is off? Could it be my distributor be going bad? Any help is appreciated.

You have skipped a tooth. End of story! You should be able to slide the belt off, then turn the cam 1 tooth and slide the belt back on.
So it doesn't happen again set your tensioner. Loosen tensioner bolt and turn the crankshaft counterclockwise about a quarter inch then tighten the tensioner bolt.

When I did my swap My timing marks were no where close when I tried to set the dizzy timing, I set the timing belt up off of the oil pump mark and then noticed later that the crank pully mark was no longer aligned...so I check the mark on the pump and se it up and it was still good, what had happened was the crank pulley must have slipped on the balancer and it would move every now and then, not by hand but you must have spun while the motor was spinning, maybe try another pulley, thats what I did and now I'm solid
