Icon6 Timing belt and Distributor

hey guys
I had this problem lastnight and was up til 3 am to fix it.
We discovered that the distributor was turned so far off timing that it had burned up a couple contacts. After some cleaning it was fine, but then my gear head friend started toying around with the timing belt/crank assembly.
Basically what it came down to was, the timing had to be off one tooth too much to get the distributor to bolt on in the right place and keep the car running smooth without "bogging" out or sounding like the throttle was being drowned by fuel.

Why did this happen? I bought the car two days ago and put brand new plugs in it yesterday cuz the wires were already new.

First make sure the cam and crank timing is on point.
Not need to be a tooth off. No motor will run good like that.

Then out the dizzy in and line it up to the middle till you can get a timing light on it.

Also post what motor, what body, ecu etc..

We did all that. What I am trying to say is Even with the correct line up, however it happened, the distributor would need to be turned so far that it wouldn't reach the block again to be bolted back on.
It is a 95 civic dx 4door with 1.5 16v motor non vtec

Upload it to photobucket then post link to pix.

But I am willing to bet that that's what the problem is.
I ran like that for a day when I swap out a blow z6 for a y7 motor.
