Default timing or not?

ok, i have a prob. i have asked and searched b4 and still no answer. i have a d15b vtec and all the parts needed to make it run right. timing is on point and everything is wired up correct. heres the question. my car runs great for like ten minutes than after that, it starts to back fire goin into the next gear. like if i go from 1st to second and then hit the pedal, it backfires. a friend of mine said it could be the valve lashing is too tight or loose. is this possible, i know u can have them too tight and loose, but is this the symtom?
thanx in advance.
