Yes, burning oil will leave black/blue/dark grey smoke coming out of your exhaust. If you're getting white/light grey smoke, you might have a bad head gasket. Anyways get that fixed, it's bad for a lot of things, your cat and o2 sensor to name a few, although if you don't fix it, you can always poke some holes in the muffler and tie some empty beer cans to the back. Nothing is more badass .

it has to burn pretty bad to see the smoke, in my opinion. i've had cars burn oil but not visibly smoke.

i asked my sister to drive the car around the block and indeed i saw some grey smoke coming out when she accelerated from a stop sign, but it stopped in a second. its an stock 88 civic with 122k city miles. Lots of hills so im guessing that worn it down .

Im a noob to cars and im trying to learn as much as i can. What does a rebuild on an engine consist of? normally what is done and how much would you expect it to cost?

damn, I wouldn't even think about rebuilding if that's all the more mine smoked. the original d15 in my 91 dx used to burn a quart of oil in 50 miles. I'd seriously have to stop every 50 miles, add a quart of oil, and brush the carbon off my #3 spark plug!! This damn 90 ls I have in it now burns a quart in something like 100-150 miles. Damn, I need a new car.

my car burns oer 1L per week. When I stop at a stoplight, there is so much smoke out back that I can't see the car behind me.

it should be normal for all gasoline engine to burn up at least a half a quart every 3000 miles. But I have had acivic that didnt burn any for 4000 miles.

The two lines (or holes) on the dipstick are supposed to be a quart apart, so if you check your milage when the oil level is exactly on the top mark, then just pay attention and see how many miles you can drive before it gets to the lower mark.

As far as rebuilding an engine, it all depends on what motor you have, what gets replaced, how good of parts you feel like paying for, and labor. Basically, it's almost impossible to say without talking to a mechanic about the things I just mentioned.
