Default Speedometer acting funny - occasional CEL

About a month ago my speedo stopped working and every so often a CEL would come on. I assumed my VSS went out, but every once in a while the speedo would try to work (bounce from 0-20mph) (I registered about 5 miles in 2 tanks of gas) so I decided to check my connections. I played with it a little and took it for a drive but nothing. Then about a week ago after my car sat for about a week, I took it out and it was working. I drove my car everyday since and no problems. Then yesterday it quit again. Now I don't even see it trying to work at all (registering 0miles).

Does this sound like a bad VSS or a connection problem?

Any help would be great! Thanks in advance.

I bet money the connection to the VSS is bad. Look at the connector and the plug on the VSS for corrosion.

Thanks! I will do that ASAP. I did search, but answers were vauge! I was looking for answers to my specific problem.

Has anyone had the same problems and had it be the VSS?

Yeah, my problem was exactly like yours. Erratic speedo and such...

The plug on the VSS is vertical so water and junk sits there and corrodes it. I replaced the VSS which was rusted and wired in a new plug and it has worked perfectly for about a year so far.

Can someone explain what a VSS is...and also where it is located?....it seems that I have the same problem here.

The VSS is the Vehicle Speed Sensor located on the tranny near the firewall

Yeah, straight down from the throttle body. If you search there are many threads showing its location.
