What do you guys think of JG head package?
I'm thinking of getting a JG head package for my 89 CRX Si. Anyone else in here have any kind of headwork done on their SOHC? I'm curious on what kind of HP numbers i'd be getting. I've heard from 130 all the way to 160, and that's a big disparity in HP. The JG head package includes a racing head, ported intake manifold with port matched TB along with a cam of your choice.
I would do it your self. I have ported several heads before and it aint that tough if you get the porting kit. I think the kit is like 80 bucks with instructions. You get about 15 HP from a ported head. Then you can add a cam and adjustable cam gear and finally get rid of that ugly cam gear cover thingy. Is your engine a stock SOHC 1.6L Si engine? That is what I have and I dont believe you need to do engine swaps to put out 140 HP.
Do :
Porting
Hedders
Exhaust (aparently now keep the cat on so it dont sound like a weed wacker!!)
CAI
Seprate Fuel managment you can make for 30 cdn if your good with electronics
Cam
Cam Gear
Your car also will weight lighter!
A must is a polly suspension kit about 200 cdn. If you want a sleeper that handles you have to get it.
Hope that helps intrested in how it turns out. Make sure you do some cleaning and powder coating in the engine bay etc. when you do any work hehe

Doing it yourself is ok, if you live in the ghetto, but a machine shop can do a much better job, cutting further into the head, and in tested critical areas. Also if they are doing a valve job, there is no way to do this yourself, as it requires a very expensive machine to maintain accurate and distinct angles all the way around the valve opening. A step up on a machine shop porting a head is sending it to Extrude hone, you can read all about it at their site. As for JG: if it's a racecar, and receives daily maintenance

I definitely don't want to do any porting myself. I've read into porting and it's a science. Just cause you make the biggest hole doesn't mean more HP. If you make the hole too big, you will lose velocity, which is just as important as volume of air. I know JG is the best with Honda's, i was just curious what others that had their SOHC done with JG felt about the increase in HP or if they had any dyno's done. And obviously JG's heads are given a 5 angel valve job and it's also milled.

oh yeah I had a 2 year course on machining engines. Easy if you know what your doing.
Exactly if the hole is too big your manifolds wont even match even if you port them. It is like an exhaust system the 3" piping is gonna be bad at idle too4000RPM but if it ever got to 12,000RPM then it would be king. Thats like porting if the hole is too big your power will go up but only at over9000RPM. you will also loose all you low end tourque cause a mini van to beat you
If you dont know what your doing take it to get done some where. If you do have expieriance then get a manual too. I use the manual everytime and folow it even tho ive done a dozen jobs.
Good Luck

my own personal daily driven crx only has headwork, custom cams, cam gear, and the bolt ons IHE.
stock block.
13.6 on the 1/4 mile 138hp at 115lbs torque.

Dont underestimated the d16a6 engine because is a great engine to boost.check the zex crx he have 450 hp to the wheels. But for the porting you can do it yourself but is better in the machine shop. personnaly i have 3 angle valve job and .50 shimed valve spring. i paid it 350 canadian dollars for the head job.
