That is a hard one, Are the threads just messed up, or are they gone??? If they are gone there is nothing to re-tap. You could run a tap just to try and clean up the other threads. and hope for the best.

If the threads are gone, and the other threads do not look so good I would say do the heli-coil. If a coil is done right they can be very strong, I jsut would recemend being very carfull when replcing plugs and how tight you put the, and on the coil make sure to use anti-sieze just incase something does happen, that way you dont pull the coil out and totally screw yourself.

 

I would try to get something like this re-tapped. Heli-coils work good, but for a spark plug hole I would want more of a "real" fix.
