Default 98 GSR manual tranny problem...i think...???

i recent got my car out of the shop to find out that 80 percent of the tyime i go to switch from 2nd gear to 3rd gear ...3rd gear grinds and then engages....HELP!!! Its a brand new transmisson!!

Doesn't sound right for a new tranny, was it freshly rebuilt?

it was a refurb but i mean they put it in and all think it could be the synchros?

Grinding can be either the synchros or the sleeves.

is it an expensive repair? how much and how long u think it would take for the repair ...rough estimate...thanks

Its not hard for a experienced tranny tech, but it takes a lot of work. You have to do a complete teardown on the transmission to fix it.

Its a min of $400-500 in labor alone for the transmission (not including taking the transmision in and out of the car).

If it was supposed to be a remanufactured transmission, sounds like it either wasn't done right, if at all.

i was told by the guy who sold me the car that it could be the short throw shifter that he had installed...what do u guys think?

NO! short shifters only shorten the throw, they don't change the way the tranny engages gears.
