Time to rebuild tranny?
I have a 90 GS w/ 197k mileage. I'm wondering if it's time to rebuild my transmission...the reverse gear sometimes grinds even w/ the clutch pressed all the way down; and first gear doesnt always go in...also w/ the clutch all the way down. Does anyone know how much labor and parts would cost?
I roadrace my ITR and I'm on my second rebuild. The first time I replaced just the syncros (problem: hard to shift at high rpms) The parts cost me $200 using a friend at Honda's employee discount. I paid someone $200 for labor to install it (granted I removed the tranny and brought it to the shop)
This time the problem is worse, at high rpm, it won't come out of gear, and won't go into any gear. And when trying to downshift, it makes winding noises as I apply pressure to the shifter. I think my bearings are gone.
So here are the options that I see for me:
-gearspeed.com. They charge 275 for carbon coated syncros, and do it yourself, or pay someone Or they charge 1200-1500 for a complete rebuild.
-Purchase a brand new tranny, using friends emp. discount again ~1500
-Purchase a used tranny, with risks of course, but this is the cheapest way
-Purchase a remanufactured tranny
-http://www.drivetrain.com/autotransoverhaulkits.html
they sell complete rebuild kits, and do it yourself $480
I went w/ the last option. I'll be doing the install next week. I've never done it, but it doesn't look that hard to do.
If your not going to do it yourself, the cheapest might cost near 1k, for used tranny plus labor.
keep in mind that these prices are for a 97up ITR tranny(which has LSD), so yours should be a lot cheaper.
Good luck
Hope my list of options helps
