how often should i flush my transmission? i recently got a CEL code and have to have it flushed. i'm guessing every 60k.

wait around a bit. i just noticed you're driving a 97 accord. i only know that for my 1990,it carries 4 belts. i dont know much about yours,but i'll bump this up for you

 

i thought 4th and 5th gen accords were very similar

If you are taking it to a shop, they can get the parts cheaper than you can. So I doubt you would save any money buying the parts yourself.

PS: If you bring it to a Honda dealer they can probably wait until they take it all apart, then see what parts they need. Another shop can hardly do it that way because they don't have the parts in stock. But it will probably cost more at the dealer, so it's really a tuff choice.

yea, but the shops deal w/ aftermarket parts to keep their profit margins up while keeping the rates somewhat lower than dealer...

I bought Honda OEM parts from an online/ebay honda dealer on the west coast & have it delivered on the east coast... (prices were somewhat cheaper than dealers of NJ...)

from my list o parts, the only aftermarkets i woulda purchase were a felpro valve cover gasket set, ngk plugs, aftermarket drive belts (ps/ac/alt) but stuck to OEM when concerned w/ very important parts of the timing belt.

I was going to take it to my independent shop, but they're soo booked... & wife needed the car , i ended up going to honda dealer instead. if you read my thread

 

the last part is the same as the 1st... or do u mean balance shaft tensioner?

to add to your parts list:

plugs, if they haveta remove them during the job; they reinstall them w/out any additional fee, just like the drive belts.
prestone 5 year/100ooomile coolant... the yellow stuff. (who's still using green?)
oil/filter...optional since u can diy after they have done changing those oil seals...

as far as the CEL code: what was the actual code #? I didn't know it would light up to remind u to flush the auto transmission fluid...

to add:

i usually drain/refill the auto trans fluid every other oil change or 2x a year... since the filter can't be reached like other cars... it's only like ~3 quarts every time you do it.

some on the board likes to use honda-specific only... others, like me, use regular mercon-dexron w/ no adverse effects
