Default Balljoint press

I'm trying to press out my front lower balljoint, as the threads are mangled. My local Autozone (and other parts stores) has the "free rental" kit, but it doesn't have the correct shims that fit my balljoint ('00 integra).

Has anyone used this http://www.harborfreight.com/c...=3552 or this http://www.harborfreight.com/c...=3551? If they would work on balljoints, it might be nice to have a desktop press around the garage.

I'm not sure what you need shims for. I used a tool that had 2 arms and a large bolt in the middle. The arms hold onto the knuckle and the bolt presses the balljoint out. I placed a thick piece of metal on top and beat the new one in to place. Do not hit the balljoint directly on either side as this can cause damage and problems when removing and installing. Althouth I would like a press also, you would have to remove the part to put into the press. I guess it depends on how often you might use one.

the autozone rental balljoint press will work fine.

EXCEPT, when you press the new one in, be sure to not completely collapse the balljoint in the press. the sleeve is not deep enough to fully press the balljoint in, and can bottom out the threads on the balljoint. so be carefull.

I guess I am a little confused, but how will the pressing piece fit into the knuckle to press on the flat side of the balljoint?
