2006 roll cage rule question?
My latest rule book that I printed out is the '05, but I heard they changed the NHRA sport compact rules for '06 to where you need a 10 point cage for 9.99 or 135mph or faster, where as the old rule book calls for 6 or 8 point. Just looking for clarification. Thanks.
I'm looking at the rule book right now and I don't see anything about a 10-pt. roll cage. It just states that any car running 9.99 or quicker or 135mph or faster must have a roll cage. I have looked at the sportfwd section 5/4:frame and the general regulations section 12/4:11 roll cage. I,m actually a little confused about what is a 10pt. My roll cage is attached by 8 plates and the 2 arm bars and the two over head bars connect together to the same plate. Is this considered to be 2-pts. and makes my cage a 10-pt. or are there two more plates and bars needed.if so where? Anyway no were in the rule book does it say 10-pt. or 8-pt it just states roll cage and they have a complete description and pictures.
First find out if your local track is for sure NHRA. I know a lot a tracks around me are IHRA. If you are looking at runnin NDRA events see if the tracks you are goin to are IHRA or NHRA. the NDRA isn't who makes any rules, they have to conform to the track rules. IHRA has no rule about MPH in their book and you don't need a roll bar till 11.49-10.00
i've asked about the mysterious 2 other points in the "10 pt" cage setup. and from what i could find. the 10 pt only applys to race cars that have bars going through the firewall. on a full chassis unmodified firewall street car, we technically only have 8pts / plates.
yeah, i still dont get that either, LOL. I have an 8 point cage. what do i do lol
I asked about the 9.99 or 135mph rule on the NDRA forums. heres what i got.

Just an idea for you.
If you can't legally (by class rules) add a cage tube thru the front firewall, just place a bolted flat plate on both sides of the firewall and weld / add the cage tubing on both sides to those plates.......

BTW my cage is nhra certified for 8.50 and slower and is good till 2007. And for BoostR41 the original post was for nhra not ihra and if your legal for nhra your legal for ihra not the other way around.

right but that is what I am saying. if you only run IHRA tracks then go by their rules. it will save you money and you only need a roll bar till 10.00

yeah but did y ou see my discussion with the NDRA tech? he basically said i have to if i go 135mph or higher regardless of times.
your also right but us power street guys who some drive their car daily don't want to deal with the time and money to get a 10pt cage. hence why IHRA tracks are the only ones I will run at unless I detune to keep the traps down

yeah but thats if NDRA will allow you to conform to IHRA rules, because THEIR rulebook is based off NHRA.
believe me, i dont want to daily drive a 10 point either LOL, and i dont want to go through adding the 2 front bars either, YUCK.

whats wrong with daily driving a 10 point? i've been doing it for months.. barely notice it. i dont even think the cop noticed it, and he was standing at my door..
i don't think adding the bars is extremely hard, definately easier to go 10pt from the start though.. when i had my 10pt put in there was a guy converting his from 6/8 to "10".. it will obviously be harder to weld the halo to the main hoop because you can't weld over the top.. whereas you could when the main hoop wasn't fixed.

IHRA track means IHRA rules. the NDRA officials aren't the ones that would kick you out the track officials are.

Chris, the rule they changed requires anyone going over 135mph to meet the 9.99 and faster qualifications. So, you need a license and you need to get the cage nhra certified to be able to run 135mph and faster now. I'm dealing with getting ready for this right now actually; the chassis goes in for the cage in a couple of days.

I don't see the 10-point requirement anywhere; however if you count the different pars that go to the floor (not on separate plates) you see all 10 points there. I'm not sure if that's how you count points in a cage though. However I do know that you don't have to have 10 separate plates on the floor to get legal for 9.99 to 0.50.
