smoking 1990 when first cranked up
smokes real bad when you first crank up and about a mile down the road it dont smoke any more that day but the next morning it does it again. not sure if it is the valve seals or the rings. it has over 200k on it. i pulled the intake hose froom the breather and it had oil in it. like it had blow back
Lots of oil in the intake is a good sign of blow by, usually the oil wiper rings collapse from thermal stress. There might not be a significant drop in compression though. The engine might quit smoking when warmed up a little because the rings reseat from the temp rising
Another vote for piston rings (oil control specifically)
Valve seals would cause smoke mostly under high manifold vacuum conditions like decelerating for a traffic light, etc.
One thing I've had some success with is pulling the spark plugs and squirting some GM Combustion Chamber cleaner in the cylinder and let it sit for several hours. If the rings are gummed up and stuck in their grooves, this will often release them.
A dry/wet compression test will give you a good idea of the rings health.

Yep, had the same problem last week. I decided to pull the engine out and do a complete tear down even though compression was still at 160 psi across all four. Found piston 3 and 4 oil control rings gummed up and stuck up.
Surprised to see the cylinder bores still in good shape and compression rings within service limit of 0.020". Send the block for honing, cylinder head for rebuilding, main and rod bearings and piston rings replaced.
Try the GM cylinder cleaner first. You might be able to release the oil control rings and stop the smoking as suggested.
Good luck.
