Painting a Carbon Fibre Hood, Weight of Stock Hood
Is it possible to paint a carbon fibre hood to make it look like stock? Will the weave show through and make it look half assed?
Also, did a search for this but found conflicting answers - what is the weight of the stock hood.

The answer to the first question depends on the quality of both the hood and the body shop painting it. As for the weight of the stock (DC2) hood, according to my bathroom scale it is around 30-31 lbs.

If you care about the stock look, leave the stock hood on. Painting will add significant weight to the cf hood - which is why we get them, right?

I have seen a CF hood painted and look exactly like stock. Another choice is for you to sell your CF hood and get a fiberglass hood. But with fiberglass hoods, hood pins are a must.. so..

I'm somewhat interested in this as well (painting a CF hood).
My Imoto hood is "in the works" so to speak, and with the rash of R thefts and molestations I'm considering having it painted so as to not "stand out" as much to thieves, as well as the law enforcement officials (anti rice).

carbon fiber > fiberglass
there would be no advantages to getting a fiberglass hood over a CF one, and fiberglass isnt perfect looking like stock either and CF is MUCH MUCH more durable in any situation.....and purchasing a good quality fiberglass hood isnt a whole lot cheaper than a CF one and you'd know with the fiberglass one youd HAVE to get it painted whereas with carbon fiber it is not in bad taste to leave it unpainted.

paint adds significant weight? are you kidding?
Not kidding.
You wouldn't think paint would add weight, but it does. Significant? Well I guess that's subjective, but to give you an idea:
I bought a cf hood a while back and the guy had it clearcoated. Normally cf hoods are between 9-14 lbs - but this one was at least 3-5 lbs heavier. That's another 33% heavier than a 9lb hood. So instead of a 9lb hood, it was 12-14lbs and for a 14lb hood, that's closer to 17-19lbs. This was three coats of clearcoat. I sold that hood b/c the weight savings weren't as much as I'd like (since that's why I had purchased it). I'm sure you can paint it and it won't be as heavy as stock.....
Why not try it and see? It won't be perfect, but a good hood will be very close in terms of fit and finish to stock.....
As for me, I'll take it without paint though.
yeah paint is heavy!!! thats that, but come on 3-5 lbs?? you barely if even at all feel any difference if you lost 30 lbs from the car and that is fact! you jokers crack me up.
Paint does add weight. Think of it this way....Weigh a quart of paint, than throw on the additives like primer, thinner etc and you will see that it quickly adds up. It wont be as heavy as stock but it will gain some weight if it is painted and prepped properly.

Painting wont add that much weight; just paint the top with a thin coat and dont paint the underside.
my brother had a carbon fiber hood on his fd. he got it painted, and it looked perfect. he only paid 30$ for the job too.
Because the freakin shop dropped his stock hood paint side down..........
but yah, the painted looked perfect o my eye.
it was red too.

Paint does end up weighing alot. Just think, why doesnt american airlines paint the whole plane with paint. Alot of the planes are silver and just have the stripes. It saves weight.
DUDE , IT WOULDN'T EVEN TAKE A QUART OF BASECOAT AND CLEARCOAT TO PAINT THE HOOD. . . AND MOST OF THE SOLVENTS THAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT EVAPORATE ANY WAY. . . THIS IS WHAT DRYS THE PAINT. PAINT DON'T WEIGH ****. PLUS THE BC/CC WOULD PREVENT THE HOOD FROM BREAKING DOWN.

I don't think I'd ever paint my cf hood, but I too would have to see before & after pics before deciding for sure - keep us posted
[QUOTE]simple answer, The surface area is a lot more than our hoods and when you are talking about that much surface area the paint weight adds up. And not all of the cash is spent on making it lighter(can you make it lighter?), there are other factors (lightning, conductivity, radar, etc.)[/QUOTE)
I understand it was more of a generalized statement, that yes paint does have a weight to it. As far as making it lighter, yes, There were some pretty interesting articles on one of the F-1 site regarding how they weigh the paint that is used on each car..........Hey it snow here in the winter,.......I read about cars

Sorry, but I just think that some people take the weight thing to the extreme. You have to loose alot to gain a little. And F1 is just a little more high-tech than us. They are about perfection, and nothing less.
