To those with aftermarket steering wheels...
Please if you could, let me know.
Did your insurance company give you and ****? I mean when the adjuster looked
at the car, did he/she say something? I am looking to get a aftermarket wheel....and I know its illegal. BUT. I would like to know your stories.
TIA
Chris

Getting aftermarket wheels/rims isnt illegal. As far as i know, and in every state, as long as it passes inspecsion its legal.
Now some places are hard with the offset. I know in pa, if the rim (not tire) is sticking out past the fenders to some extent, thats illegal. But elsewise, you will be ok.
As far as insurence, every company is different. My insurence, USAA, wouldnt give me anything for aftermarket parts. Its just the way they are.

Some insurance companies ask "is your car modified, does it have aftermarket rims" If you say yes they probably jack your rates a bit. If you lie and say no and you need to file a claim they might say "those are aftermarket rims, you lied to us, no coverage for you!"

Not true in either case. Heck, in most cases they won't even ask.
However, whether or not they will increase the amount of a claim to account for aftermarket equipment varies from one company to another. Some won't adjust it at all. Others will, but probably won't give you the full amount you paid for the mod (they depreciate it). At some companies, you can purchase coverage for added equipment but at extra cost. Ask your insurance company.

I know my insurance companies rape me for everything, how many km to work every morning, are there any mods, is it a 2 door or a 4 door....etc.
And I am pretty sure the isurance company can deny you a claim if you lied to them (not liability though) But they would have to have justification for it. just like they will if you get into an accident and you were drunk. At least up here they do. I will have to re-read my paper work if I can find it.
Of course if you put on different rims you are right, they won't give a damn. However if you have a 500HP engine in your car and said it was stock and got into a major accident cause you were racing....that is a different story.
At my age I just get nailed regardless (3000/year on a 98 hatch.....
)

Seeing as your aftermarket steering wheel takes away your driver's side airbag I would imagine you could run into more than one legal problem. As for coverage, you guys don't have free health car so maybe cause you didn't have an airbag and it cost more to fix your nose then they won't pay for it. I really don't know.
If you meant after markign steering wheel why is this in the wheel/tire forum?
Cheers.

that would not be aftermarket...
youre going to get hassled, more than likely, if they know about it (especially if youre claiming that the car is srs equipped to begin with)

They only care if you have airbags, if you don't they don't care. If you have had your airbags deploy then it doesn't matter either. So if you are in neither of those categories then yes you might catch **** from your insurance.
