Maybe the bolts holding the shifter/shift linkage came loose. A good solution would be get the ES shifter bushings. I got them and LOVE them.

would not changing this hurt the tranny at all? or would it just give me a crappy shift?

If it's always popping out of gear it might hurt the tranny, but other than that it should be fine.

Don't bother. First simply try to tighten up the bolt on the shift linkage. If it gets loose it can give the shifter a sloppy feeling.

Guys, your not addressing the issue..

Get under the car The bottom of the shifter is held onto the linkage with one bolt. take it out and check to make sure there are those rubber(plastic?) things that go between the metal base and the sides of the fork on the linkage. Maybe they dropped out. This would give excessive side to side movement.

Short shifters usually use bearings opposed to just a bushing.

You have a motor swap, a B16. did u get the B16 shift linkage? from what car is this from? if u got shift linkage from a integra car with a civic shifter, itll have slop cause the interga's shifter has a base thats like 1cm longer.
