My manifold is poopy brown and I want to clean it up and also having it high temp coated is a plus... what are my options. I have seen some manifolds that are nice and shiny with high temp coating on them...

I had mine done at a local shop. they sand blasted, clean it and then ceramic coat the manifold.

Been running if for about one year on my daly driver and its still just like the day I picked it up.

I would say, search for a local shop that can do that for you, or im sure that there are places that you can send it out to get it done, but the shipping would cost you. Cuz I know that manifole wheights close to 20lbs.

If I could coat my mani again, I would definitely send to swain tech instead of a local place. Swain tech stuff is thicker, holds heat better and won't scratch off like the powder-type coatings that most others offer.

I am no way affiliated with the company. Just after having other coatings, I've seen the light.

Instead of coating the turbo, just buy a thermal blanket from a place like boostlogic.com. hell, even DEI sells one but I don't like theirs.

 

If you hit the manifold with some scotchbrite every few months it will make it look 10x better.
But on the coating question. I got mine done from Shodan on here. He did the polished 2000 degree coating

for the manifold and the housing were like $225 or so.
I got all the rest of the stuff powdercoated from a diff source.
I gotta send my DP out to Shodan once I finish the mock up. Same polished finish

Im going with Polydyn. They have some great looking coatings. There are also some big timers that use them as well (ie NASCAR, NHRA, SCCA, CART, Boat Racing, IROC,Rusty Wallace, Don Prudhomme, Ed McCulloch, Cruz Pedregon, Steve Kinser, A.J. Foyt )

I like Swaintech too. They have a very nice shop. But they only offer the matte white colored coating.

I have contacted several companies in the last few days regarding coatings. (On because of this thread but because I am going to have at least my manifold done). Now, I had never heard of swain tech but I know some Scoobie guys love them. So I thought I would inquire. Here it is:
Thanks for writing. If you give me a picture that shows me the scale of the parts so I know the size I can certainly give you a good estimate. The exact price would be based on the processing of the specific parts, with size, masking and surface prep time being the biggest factors in the cost, but a good estimate can be give from pictures.

Our coating is the only true ceramic thermal barrier available. There is so much energy required to apply a ceramic that it simply is not possible to change the color when the coating is applied. There are many companies that apply thin paint based "Jet Hot" types of coatings that do have color options. They can do it because they are essentially applying a thin paint. With a real ceramic, it would not be possible to change the color when it is applied. However, we do have many customers who use a good high temp paint like a VHT and apply it right over our coating.

It is never a good idea to apply a ceramic on the inside of turbo parts. Our coating really is ceramic and it is applied about .015" thick. The most critical step in assuring proper adhesion is applying a good abrasive blast to the parts. There simply is no way the inside of a pipe can be fully prepped to get the good tenacious bond needed for the coating. You would not want to take the chance of having the ceramic come off and damaging the turbo.

Again, there are the paint based folks who are putting down materials that really are paint based. They are only about .001 thick and are paint so they are not likely to do any damage when the come lose from poorly prepared surfaces inside the pipe. They started doing it because it is much easier to just coat it all over than it was to take the time to mask it. After a few years of processing parts that way, those companies started talking about the performance gains offered by coating the inside.

So in summary, white would be the only color as it came back from us and it would not be wise to coat the inside of turbo parts so we keep the coating on the outside only.

A buddy of mine just had his Scoobie parts done. That stuff is nice. Although I don't like the white, I would take function over form anyday...

They do both black (high temp) and the silver stuff.

 

You can spray high temp paint over the Swain-Tech coating if it being white bothers you that much. I know a couple of guys who run 6-second V8s that spray flat black paint over the coating cause they're ricers at heart.

 

hpc gets my vote....they do a really good job

it's coated on the inside and outside....i know alot of people that use HPC and swear by them....before i got that crap coated...during the summer if the car had been runing and i tried to pop the hood it would almost burn my fingertips......well since my parts have been HPC'd...big difference.....i'm doing my charge pipes next

This is why I keep saying swain tech is the ****.

All these other coatings like HPC, Hyperkote, whatever, are all pretty much just a thin powder coating, it looks like paint for christ sakes. How well is that gonna hold in heat?

Now posting from experience, I have a hyperkote coating on my mani and turbo, and its so thin, soo much heat radiates from that area still I had to put a DEI tunnel shield on the underside of my hood.

Which is what they said you "can" do but it isn't recommended.

He's doing my turbo in black, too. I originally wanted the polished finish, but don't think it will stay shiny, especially with road salt. Hopefully the black will stay close to it's original color. It looks clean.

 

i heard that HPC supplies alot of other places with their coatings...also i think HPC has some Avation or nasa certifictions...i know they stand behind their work

i noticed a big diffence in my under hood temps

my buddy just got his IC piping coated in the silver HPC coating and it droped his IAT on average 15-20 degree's
that's a big differenc and the only thing changed was the HPC to the IC piping
