A few things to look at would be:

1. How many miles are on the car
2. How well taken care of was the car
3. How often do you hit vtec

Answer those and go from there.

Burning oil in "older" honda's isn't typical at all. We see cars from the 80's and sometimes 70's and they don't burn a drop.
It's all in the care you give your car.
But typically speaking you probably have bad rings.

with higher mileage engines the stress on the cylinder walls from the motion of the rod/piston tends to give it a oval/egg shape. this could allow oil past the rings and could cause it to smoke.. or as MooGo^ said, your rings could just be bad, giving you the same result.

it could be any number of causes:

bad rings
bad valve seals
blown head gasket
ovoid cylinders, etc.

how much oil you're burning vs. mileage vs. frequency of hitting Vtec will help determine causality.
