My 99 gsr has 87,000 miles and is burning oil. The place that has been
doing service on my car said that it is common for these high reving engines to burn a little oil. My dad said my rings are going bad, and to put new rings on my car would cost a fortune. Who do i believe in this situation? I don't want to put new rings on my car if i don't have to! Does anyone else out there own this car and have this same problem? Any help on this would be great.

how much?? its pretty common to burn a little oil driving the **** out of your car in vtec all the time..check ur oil and add more when needed. its no big deal if its only a little. but i dont know...im no mechanic
i have the same prob and so does all my buddies with gizzers. its pretty common for a gsr to burn a lil more oil i guess. i just add more when needed
Ok, since my last oil change which was 260 miles ago my dipstick went from being inline with the second hole to being just a little over the half mark; inbetweeen the two holes. I don't know how many qts. that would amount to be but it sure does seem like alot to me.
Yeah, that's alot. Mine has burned almost no oil (a little below the first line) and I'm changing my oil after this post at about 2700 miles. I rev my gsr above 7 at least once a day, usually on the way to school. Mine's a '95 with 124k though. How do you drive this car...pretty hard? There are other possibilities than just the rings...however they are all equally as expensive. Good luck man.

bad valve seals is another. does your car smoke at all? i recently rebuilt my GSR with 137K, and it was smoking all the time and just smelled all the time, thats how i knew something was up. i spent 1500 total on a my rebuild, seems to be running just fine now.

UHH OH! Remember how I changed the oil in that last post. Turns out I too have your "problem". I stated my oil level had hardly gone below the first "hi" line. Well, it was barely on the dipstick at all. So, I figured it out. It's definitely the high-rpms that are doing it (of course
). I was taking it easy on the car only going up to about 5 or 6krpms until I got more into the car. I guess I spoke too soon. I will watch it in the future and continue to add oil (just put Mobil 1 in yesterday...good stuff). I'm not rebuilding anything if I can just add oil for the meantime.

=head rebuild. I just think with less than 90k you shouldn't have to already rebuild the head...then again it depends on how it was driven. "a little". How much? All cars tend to smoke a little when starting up, when cold, etc. What color is the smoke...coming out tailpipe right? (anywhere else would be really bad) That's all important. If you do have to rebuild the head, it would be way more expensive for aftermarket cams, valves, springs, etc....(contact skunk2). However, it might be worth it to do the work now while you have the head exposed. I would seriously have it checked out first before you jump into anything expensive. It's really too hard to diagnos online, but a good estimate would be about 1k to get the work done (and that's for a good deal). Once again good luck, I hope you get this worked out.
