1990 rear tail light issue.....<help really needed>
alright the issue im having is that my rear tailights will not work... they only work when i apply the brakes....now ive checked all the fuses and they are all in proper working order.... so any ideas
and an update :
After taking in to consideration the suggestion posted, here are my results of furtherer troubleshooting.
1. All fuses and relays are serviceable working.
2. All bulbs working and correct part number installed as per the manufacture.
3. In the rear trunk no relays or other type of fuse.
4. Each function of light operation is working, expect lenience plate light are disconnected.
5. The same bulbs used for brake lights function as running lights, but are working when brake pedal is used, reverser light working all hazard lights working.
im still not able to get the running lights to function....

I know you've said that the bulbs are working, however i've seen plenty of bulbs that work when the brakes are applied and not otherwise. Try a brand new bulb and see if that helps. There actually are several relays in the trunk area. I know you said that they are working, but if the lights arn't lighting then there is obviously a problem, and replacing the relay just to make positively sure wouldn't be a bad route.
This may be off topic, but why would you disconnect the liscense plate bulbs?

relays ??? my mistake i meant to say fuses.... the one by the dead pedal and main fuse in the engine compartment.... i havent seen any relay like components in the rear trunk area....would you happen to have a diagram to help me pinpoint the relays so that i can try replacing them and seeing if this corrects my problem.... a diagram even a hand drawn one of sorts would be greatly appreciated....
Heres a diagram I got from Majestic Honda's website. #28 and 29 are labled as sensors, but i can't tell where they go exactly. When I was replacing my antenna, and installing my subwoofers, i rember there being several relays hidden behind the plastic (i'm spacing on the correct term) coverings which hide all the metal frame in the trunk.
I'd bet your dashlights don't work either ?,,,If so,
your problem is more than likely the Headlight combination switch. One of the contacts in 90-93 models will either get gummed up with old grease or the contact inside the switch will be burned enough to cut power to just the tail & dashlights but not affect any other lights. I just fixed two of these models this month for the same problem. You can remove & CAREFULLy disassemble the switch and try cleaning the contacts or just get a new switch.

i swapped out the mult tasking switch and this had no effect on the lights at all....also my dashlights are in perfect working order...all lights work properly except for the rear running lights...some how when i brake thats the only time any of the rear lights light up...
Back in the 'good old days' hondas had some issues with the wire insulation cracking off in the wire harness usually right where the drivers side trunk hinge makes it flex. Peel open the harness in that area and check for bare wires.
I had the exact same problem with my 90, this took forever to figure out so if you haven't fixed it yet here is the solution. there is a running light relay box underneath the dash above the hood release (in that general area) black box says right on it running light relay, there's also a number on it but a can't remember what it is. unplug the harness that connects to it and remove the box. now you can do one of two things, if your handy with a soldering gun or know someone who is you can remove the circuit board from the relay box and solder a couple loose resistors back together (this is what I did and it solved my problem). Or if you don't find any loose solder joints chances are it's a relay sticking, sometimes you can give the box a couple of wacks and it might free up the relay but that won't last forever. If you replace the box altogehter make sure you get the same part number that's on yours the 1990 is the only accord with daytime running tail lights. Also watch getting the part from a scrap yard chances are the same thing has happened to that one.
Can you tell I've been through this, just glad to help someone else out with this problem because it's such a pain

This is the exact problem I am having with my 1989 Accord DX. No Tail Lights and No Dashboard Lights
This Headlight Combo switch you are talking about... Where is the location of it? Is it the Headlight/Turn Signal Switch on the steering column?
