Default steering rack or inner tie rod ends?

its a 90 crx si ... no p/s of corse...i just got it up and running earlier today but while im driving down the road the steering is realy squirly... when its not running and you listen carefully you can hear a nocking when you turn the wheel back and forth and you can feel it if you put your hand on the rims... i had my father turn the wheel while i felt each tie rod on each side of the car and they both knocked the outer tie rods were not moving at all....

my question is... is there a way to tell if its the inner tie rod ends that are going bad or it it the steering rack its self...

rack end bushing is located inside the end of the steering rack, not accessable unless you remove the inner tie rods. you can remove the inner and outers together therefore you wont mess up you alignment. do a seach under rack end bushing, theres a few posts about it

im pretty sure your rack end bushing needs replacement (the one INSIDE the passenger side boot), and maybe your outer tie rods, both sides, need replacement. it just takes a simple check. your inner tie rod probably doesnt need to be replaced as likely as the outer, but its possible. most definately the steering rack end bushing needs replacement.

Even if it is just the inner tie rod I would replace the outer as well while you have it apart. Check the rack bolts that tie into the subframe as well. Make sure and get an alignment once all your suspension work is done.
