D16Z6 Head Question
my 00' model d16y8 civic came with a VTEC-E Head. I installed SRP pistons recently and i want to improve the flow of the head, so i was thinking i'd switch to a z6 Head, as it supposedly has stronger springs/ bigger valves than my current pathetic VTEC-E economizing Head.
I was wondering whether the z6 head would run fine with my stock OBD2 ecu? I dont want to bother getting a harness and obd1 ecu at the time cause i wont be chipping it right away. maybe when i want to i'll get the ecu etc, but for the time being will the z6 head run fine with my OBD2 ecu?
my mechanic tells me it'll work fine without an ecu conversion but i want to be sure hes not just experimenting around.

if your just using the z6 head, itll run fine. the onli things your ECU will be watching over is your fuel and incoming air, exhaust, and im pretty sure NOTHING within the head. im not sure what dizzy u should use, but i think the y8 dizzy would be best bet or just the one u already got.
thanks for the quick reply lemon_juice.
so it'll work perfectly fine then? ..mechanic mentioned just the distributer..said he'd mess around with that and nothing else, and that the head'll work as fine as it would on a z6 with an obd1?

no, itll will run just as fine as a y8 head on a obd2.
but i have a suggestion for you. thats to get a computer for a y8, because your vtec-e ecu will not be optimum for vtec engagement. and also think about this, because the y8 ecu may look for different sensors than the vtec-e ecu, so instantly that means a CEL. this problem will onli arise if u do go with a Y8 ecu. its an experiement that u can do and will not hurt anything, and can be easily fixed by replacing it all back to what it was before u started.

right, but its for the vtec-e motor u have right now.
optimum choice of ecu would be for the y8, which is also obd2 either A or B, im not sure. find a obd2b ecu for the y8, which will be the easiest for you. itll run your vtec and utilize better fuel/timing maps which you vtec-e ecu will hold you back.
but as i mentioned earlier, using a y8 ecu will put up a CEL, because it looks for different sensors. ask your mechanic about it.

the distributors from the d16y8 and d16y5 and even d15b7 will all fit on any of those heads. but the d16z6 distributor will fit on the z head and others won't. so if you go w/ z6 head you will need a z6 dizzy and then re-wire it for the obd2 harness. some extra work there.
also you might need different plug wires because I've tried z6 plugs on a y8 head and they did not fit as snug as they should on the valve cover.

no, he has a hx motor, i forgot the code so the whole time i refered to it as a vtec-e.
by putting on a z6 head on this hx motor and using a y8 computer, itll be just like running around in a d16y8, giving up .1 displacement and watever compression difference.
