B18B1 Clutch Problem
Hi,
I hope someone can help me determine what's wrong with my sons transmission.
Back in April 2005, my son and I pulled his 5 speed transmission out of his car and replaced the clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, master clutch cylinder and slave cylinder. We also had the flywheel resurfaced at that time. After the installation, the car ran and drove great.
About a month ago, my sons transmission started to make a noise. With your foot off the clutch and in neutral, you could hear a whirling sound. It sounded like the clutch was barely touching the flywheel.
Yesterday, we pulled the transmission and inspected everything with a knowledgeable friend who owns a local parts store for 25 years. We replaced the race bearing on the flywheel, greased all appropriate parts and reassembled carefully. As soon as the car was started, the noise was still there.
We again pulled the transmission back out of the car, but this time, we installed a new flywheel, pressure plate and throwout bearing. Upon completion, the whirling noise is still there.
Here are the current symptoms.
1) Whirling noise in neutral when foot is off the clutch. With the car on jack stands, the front wheels are barely trying to spin when the car is in neutral. When the clutch is depressed, the whirling noise goes away and everything sounds fine.
2) When the clutch is fully depressed, you will hear a grinding sound. If you don't press the clutch all the way, everything works and sounds as expected.
Any ideas as to what could be going wrong?
Thanks,
Ron

Thanks for the reply.
I'd fully agree with you but I just installed a 2nd new throwout bearing yesterday and it makes the same noise as the first one. I checked the operation of the bearing several times before reinstalling the tranny and it all seems ok. It may be the bearing, but I don't think so.

did your son allow the proper mileage on the new clutch ebfore he started to pound on it? approx 500-750 miles on the clutch is the proper break-in time for a new clutch. just make sure all the bolts are secured because if one bolt is a lil loose that might be the sound. my friends integra did that and the the flywheel boplts werent torqued down in the peoper manner and made a funny sound
Hi and thanks for you reply.....
This clutch has less than 2 miles on it and I'm the only one that has driven it since we put it in yesterday. Every single bolt on this transmission has been torqued to Acura spec. I'm kinda **** about torqueing bolts to spec. We torqued the flywheel in the proper manner in the criss cross pattern as per the manual.
Please keep the thoughts coming in.
Thanks,
Ron

My car does the same thing.
Only at idle, with foot off the clutch. It almost sounds like a squeaky belt, but obviously that's not it.
I was told it was the throwout bearing, but havent had a chance to take a look.

Did you inspect the springs arround the clutch disc? My car started to make a whirring sound then shortly after one of the springs broke free. The sounds I heard are similar to what your describing.
The clutch that was installed since April had all of the springs attached. The new clutch that we installed yesterday had all of springs attached.
The noise isn't a squeak, it's more of a whirling sound. Since both the throw out bearing and race are new, I can't imagine that they would have the same symptoms as the old ones.
sounds like a glazed over clutch to me....improper break in...or if not...something wasnt greased properly...did you grease the shaft?? and throw out bearing??
i had the same problem but this sound started before i change the clutch...i drove entill my clutch pressure plate was broken into 3 pieces..yes 3 piece...i still cant figure out why but anyways i replace my new clutch stage3, pressure plate, throwout bearing, resurfaced the flywheel...and i still have the same sound...then i change the master clutch cyliner, and slave clutch....but dang the sound still hearing...needed help....
Just an update on our progress. We were able to fix the grinding sound when the clutch was fully depressed by simply adjusting the clutch pedal.
Now to figure out what's causing the noise when the clutch is out and the tranny is in neutral.
