does my 86 si have this junk? i remember when i removed my carpet so i could take out the storage bin thingy on the back, that there was this black **** looking stuff i tried to scrape some of it off, lol, was i scraping the right stuff of? oh and do you people think it would look alright if the storage bin on the back was gone and it was just carpet there, no bin
it would be fine lol. its your car if you want to get that rubber **** offf. Here is the thing if its cold up there take a pry bar and a hammer start hammering away thats what I did or you can get soem dry ice and let it freeze hit it acouple times whala you got a freaking crazy *** mess. but guess what no more dynomat I guesss you guys on here call it.
Is this stuff really the same thing as dynamat? I ask this because some time back, I spilled some used motor oil in my CRX. It destroyed the carpet and turned alot of this sound deadening material into a goopy mess. And all of this HAS to be removed before installing a new carpet. Of course, I will want to replace this stuff if at all possible.

Similar idea per say, not the same material.
You could replace it with dynomat if you really wanted to once you get it cleaned up.

That stuff is not dynomat, it is the factory version of it, I just got done removing
all of the "black stuff" it took a couple of dazs and was not fun. The two best
ways to remove it was w/ a hammer and just bet it out (came out very
easy for some reason I think b/c of the age of the car 88REX), the second
way was to heat it up (the easiest but what a mess). Not very hard
but it does take some time

I just did that today. It works fine, except in those areas where the tar was soaked with oil. I guess the oil keeps the tar from becoming brittle at low temperatures. In that case, a hair dryer is your best bet.
