STICK SHIFT
Its all about timing. You have to find the spot where the clutch sticks to the flywheel, so that you can get power to the wheels. Simply put, Clutch in to shift and when you stop. Dont worry about downshifting for now, and make sure to get the gears in right and never reverse it when you go backwards. If you dont understand what im talking about, maybe you shouldnt drive stick. Good luck.
what helped me a lot was understanding exactly what was happening when the clutch was being pushed in. go to http://www.howstuffworks.com, i'm sure they probably have something on the topic.

, only certain race arcades had the clutch, but the one near me did and it was fun
games did pay off for us

This is how I drive stick. Starting in first gear, push the clutch pedal in all the way then let go of the cluth pedal about half an inch then push on the gas while easing of the clutch. People told me to ease off the clutch and push the gas at the same time and it just wasn't working for me. My method worked much better.
haha, you live in SF huh? you're pretty fucked as a beginner...
when i first moved to SF, i drove my accord because i was afraid of driving my 2000 Si.
the advice someone already gave about learning how the clutch works is perfect. you just gotta know that you let the clutch connect slowly and apply the gas.
and as for hills...start on a really even slope, so you barely roll back. see if you can start from there. then keep finding slightly steeper and steeper hills. eventually you'll have it mastered, you'll be fine even in tons of traffic on our crazy SF hills
